Florida’s Photobombing Manta Ray Gets Global Attention
SATELLITE BEACH, FL — It’s the photobomb that’s captured marine-loving hearts around the world.
A normal day turned into a one-in-a-million moment last weekend as Rusty Escandell, his family, and friends enjoyed the gorgeous weather during a relaxing Sunday at Officer’s Club Beach at Patrick Space Force Base.
Escandell, who told Patch he recently rekindled his love for hobby photography after a 25-year hiatus, opted to spend a few moments with his camera to capture a surfer taking on the waves offshore.
He didn’t see his limelight-loving subject until he reviewed his shots the following day.
“I was focusing on the surfer, catching multiple frames on burst mode,” Escandell told Patch in an email. “I only saw a splash behind the surfer and didn’t think much of it.”

It was much more than a splash.
Captured in one photo was a giant manta ray emerging from beneath the Atlantic waves.
Manta rays, which can grow as large as 5,300 pounds with a wingspan of 29 feet, are among the largest fish in the world, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Giant manta rays are found worldwide and are commonly seen offshore, in oceanic waters, and near productive coastlines. They are observed living off the U.S. East Coast in waters as cool as 66 degrees, though temperature preference varies by region, NOAA says.
Escandell, who frequently takes photos of nature and landscapes, told Patch he’s never had a shot capture so much attention.
As of Thursday, the photo had been picked up by numerous U.S. news outlets. Escandell said he’s also had inquiries from publications from several other countries, including the United Kingdom, China and Russia.
Escandell said he’s “flattered and humbled” by the attention the photo has received. The father of two marine biologist daughters, Escandell is also thankful for the awareness it brings to the great outdoors.
